A brief history of Greatford

Greatford (pronounced Gretford) is a beautiful olde world village situated approximately 5 miles from either Stamford, Bourne or Market Deeping in the South Lincolnshire countryside. The village, through which runs the River Glen, was once famous for its watercress beds and also boasts a splendid Elizabethan hall, Greatford Hall, which has been faithfully restored having burnt down in 1922. St. Thomas A Becket's Church of Greatford is a 12th century church with plenty of fascinating and historical items of interest including being the burial place of Francis Willis (1717-1807) A leading practitioner in mental disorders whose famously treated King George III in his own palace. Greatford is one of South Kesteven's most beautiful stone-built villages and has many attractive houses and lots of unusual stone ornaments throughout the village including a stone chair which sits on the western side of the Hare and Hounds.
